Using Haiku Deck - Created with Haiku Deck, presentation software that inspires

What is it?

  • Haiku Deck is a simple presentation tool that encourages the user to (1) simplify the message; (2) use images to amplify emotional impact; and (3) keep formatting clean and consistent. It's a terrific alternative to PowerPoint!

“We live and work in a visually sophisticated world, so we must be sophisticated in usingall the forms of communication, not just the written word.” ~George Lucas in Edutopia

Key Features

  • Haiku Deck has an iPad App and a Web App.
  • It intentionally limits how much text you can put on a slide (my favorite feature for education users!).
  • Built in creative commons image search with auto-generated image credit.
  • Ability to upload your own photos.
  • Easily add charts and graphs to a presentation without linked spreadsheets. Click here for an example and a tutorial.
  • Add public speaker notes (anyone who views your presentation online will see them) and/or add private speaker notes (only you will see them when presenting from your iPad in portrait mode). This is a way to add additional detail since the slides themselves limit the amount of text.
  • Set privacy settings for all decks.
  • Seamlessly share Haiku decks digitally and/or export to PowerPoint or as a PDF.

A Few "Limitations"

  • Only one user can contribute to a deck at a single time. This is a limitation to Haiku Deck but this article offers a great suggestion; collaborate on the outline in Google Docs, and then have one person put together the deck!
  • Multimedia (video, audio, etc.) cannot be added to a presentation (but here are two great "work-arounds" if you do want to add video content!).
  • Hyperlinks cannot be added to the presentation itself (but hyperlinks can be added to the public notes).
